Tier VIII Premium Japanese Aircraft Carrier – World of Warships
Overview
The Kaga is a unique beast among Tier VIII carriers. Originally laid down as a battleship, she was converted into an aircraft carrier during construction—a decision that shaped her identity both historically and in-game. Unlike her tech-tree counterparts, Kaga doesn’t rely on high-tier aircraft with surgical precision. Instead, she overwhelms enemies with massive squadrons of lower-tier planes, offering a relentless assault that rewards strategic target selection and flak avoidance.
Aircraft Squadrons – Quantity Over Quality
Dive Bombers
Kaga’s dive bombers are her most reliable weapon against agile targets. Each squadron drops four HE bombs per run, with three runs per squadron. What sets them apart is their low-altitude lateral dive pattern, which allows for tight, accurate drops even on destroyers. Their speed and drop angle make them ideal for punishing lightly armored ships and starting fires.
Torpedo Bombers
These bombers are Kaga’s heavy hitters—if used correctly. Each run drops four torpedoes, and like the dive bombers, she gets three drops per squadron. Their stealthy approach (base detectability of 7.5 km) allows for surprise attacks, and their fast aiming time makes them responsive. However, their long arming distance means they’re ineffective against nimble targets. Battleships and slow cruisers are their ideal prey.
Attack Aircraft
Kaga’s rocket planes are her weakest squadron. They use stock Shokaku rockets with low penetration and damage, and their health pool is even lower. With better options available, these aircraft should be reserved for emergencies—such as finishing off low-health destroyers or spotting.
Hull & Survivability – Fragile but Concealed
Kaga’s hull is lightly armored and vulnerable to most forms of damage. Her 54,200 HP is average, but her armor layout offers little protection against AP shells or torpedoes. Her secondary battery is surprisingly strong for a carrier, but suffers from poor range and is mostly defensive.
Her saving grace is excellent concealment. With full upgrades, she can reach 12.3 km surface detectability, allowing her to reposition or hide effectively. However, her slow speed (28 knots) and large turning radius make her sluggish, so early positioning is crucial.
AA Defense – Weak and Vulnerable
Kaga’s AA suite is underwhelming. Her planes are low-tier and fragile, making them easy prey for ships with strong AA like Worcester or Minotaur. Her hull AA is modest, and she relies heavily on fighter consumables to defend herself. Without allied support, she’s vulnerable to enemy carriers and flak-heavy ships.
Playstyle – Strategic Swarm Tactics
Kaga is not about precision strikes—she’s about volume and persistence. Her dive bombers should be used to harass destroyers and start fires. Her torpedo bombers are best deployed against slow-moving targets, where their long arming time won’t be a liability.
Avoid sending full squadrons into heavy AA zones. Instead, rotate squadrons, pick isolated targets, and use her massive hangar capacity to maintain pressure throughout the match. Her slow plane restoration rate means reckless losses will cripple her late-game potential.
Pros & Cons
Pros:
- Massive squadrons with high damage potential
- Dive bombers use HE bombs with accurate low-altitude drops
- Torpedo bombers drop four torpedoes per run
- Excellent concealment for a carrier
- Strong secondary battery for self-defense
Cons:
- Fragile, slow aircraft vulnerable to flak
- Long torpedo arming distance
- Ineffective rockets
- Poor ship mobility and armor
- Slow plane restoration rate
- Weak AA defenses
Optimal Configuration
Upgrades:
- Slot 1: Air Groups Modification 1 – Faster aircraft return speed
- Slot 2: Aircraft Engines Modification 1 – Longer engine boost duration
- Slot 3: Aerial Torpedoes Modification 1 – Faster torpedo travel speed
- Slot 4: Torpedo Bombers Modification 2 – Increased aircraft HP
- Slot 5: Concealment System Modification 1 – Better stealth and incoming shell dispersion
Commander Skills:
Focus on torpedo bomber survivability, speed, and aiming time. Skills that reduce torpedo arming distance and increase plane HP are essential. Secondary battery skills are optional but not a priority.
Final Thoughts
Kaga is a carrier for captains who enjoy overwhelming force and tactical persistence. She doesn’t win with finesse—she wins by outlasting and outmaneuvering. With careful squadron management and smart target selection, she can dominate even Tier X opponents. But missteps are costly, and her fragile planes and slow restoration rate mean every decision counts.
