Ruggiero di Lauria – The Stealthy Italian Heavy Hitter

Ruggiero di Lauria – The Stealthy Italian Heavy Hitter

Tier X Premium Italian Battleship – World of Warships

Overview

The Ruggiero di Lauria breaks away from the traditional mold of Italian battleships. While her tech-tree cousins rely on numerous smaller-caliber SAP shells with questionable accuracy, Lauria wields fewer but larger-caliber guns with impressive precision. This makes her a ship that rewards careful aim and positioning rather than sheer volume of fire.

Main Armament – Accuracy Over Volume

Lauria mounts eight 457 mm guns in four twin turrets. Her 30-second turret traverse is quick for her tier, but her base firing range of 19.25 km is among the shortest at Tier X. Even with a Spotting Aircraft, she only reaches an average range.

  • SAP Shells:
    • Damage: 16,600 per shell
    • Penetration: up to 114 mm
    • Improved penetration angles
    • Cannot set fires, but hit hard against cruisers and superstructures
  • AP Shells:
  • Damage: 14,900 per shell
  • Short fuse time for better performance against cruisers
  • Overmatches 30 mm plating

Both shell types make her a nightmare for cruisers and a serious threat to battleships that expose their sides. Against destroyers, her large-caliber shells are capped at 10% damage, but even a single SAP hit will sting.

Secondaries – SAP Bite, But Not Worth the Build

Lauria’s secondaries fire 135 mm SAP shells, capable of penetrating 38 mm armor. However, their 10.7-second reload and lack of accuracy bonuses make them unreliable. They can punish smaller ships that stray too close, but they’re not worth investing upgrades or skills into.

Consumables – Standard but Effective

  • Damage Control Party – Standard duration and cooldown
  • Repair Party – Heals up to 14% HP per charge, with improved citadel damage recovery (33% instead of 10%)
  • Spotting Aircraft – Extends main battery range by 20% for 100 seconds

Unlike some high-tier Italian battleships, Lauria does not have an Exhaust Smoke Generator.

Maneuverability – Speed Demon, Big Turning Circle

With a top speed of 35 knots, Lauria is the fastest Tier X battleship without an Engine Boost. She can keep pace with cruisers and reposition quickly. However, her 1,000 m turning circle and 17-second rudder shift make her sluggish in evasive maneuvers, so early positioning is key.

Survivability – Fragile but Sneaky

Lauria’s 79,200 HP is low for her tier, and her oddly-shaped citadel sits high above the waterline, making her vulnerable to well-placed AP shells. Her 39% torpedo damage reduction is strong, but she should still avoid torpedoes rather than rely on it.

Her saving grace is excellent concealment—with a full build, she can reach 12.3 km surface detection, rivaling some cruisers. This allows her to disengage or set up ambushes effectively.

Anti-Aircraft – A Weak Spot

Lauria’s AA defenses are underwhelming, with low flak output and modest continuous damage. Even Tier VIII carriers can pressure her, so she must rely on allied AA cover.

Battlefield Role – Flanking Sniper

Lauria thrives on the flanks, using her concealment and speed to create crossfires. She’s not a brawler—her low HP and exposed citadel make prolonged close-range fights risky. Instead, she excels at punishing broadside cruisers and battleships from medium range, then repositioning before the enemy can focus her down.

Final Thoughts

Ruggiero di Lauria is a ship for captains who value precision, positioning, and stealth over brute force. She rewards those who can read the flow of battle, strike from unexpected angles, and disengage before the enemy can retaliate. In the right hands, she’s a silent predator—swift, accurate, and deadly.
