Graf Zeppelin – The Blitz Carrier of Tier

German Premium Aircraft Carrier – World of Warships

Overview

The Graf Zeppelin stands as a unique entry in World of Warships’ carrier lineup. As Germany’s only aircraft carrier for a long time, she brings a distinct flavor to Tier VIII gameplay. With blistering aircraft speed, aggressive secondaries, and a hull built to withstand smaller-caliber fire, she’s a ship that rewards bold tactics—but punishes recklessness.

Aircraft Squadrons – Speed Over Subtlety

Torpedo Bombers

Graf Zeppelin’s torpedo bombers are her crown jewel. Flying at a staggering 227 knots, they can reach targets quickly and execute rapid strike runs. Each attack drops three torpedoes in a wedge pattern, and with nine planes per squadron, she can deliver three full runs.

While their alpha damage is modest and flooding chance low, their speed allows for repeated harassment, especially against ships with weak AA coverage. However, their fragility means careful timing and pathing are essential.

Attack Aircraft

These rocket planes are slower than their torpedo counterparts but pack a punch. Each run releases eight rockets with 40mm penetration, making them ideal for targeting destroyers and lightly armored cruisers. With four attack runs per squadron, they offer sustained pressure, though their vulnerability to flak makes them risky in contested zones.

Dive Bombers

Fast and agile, Graf Zeppelin’s dive bombers use the same airframe as her torpedo bombers. Each run consists of two planes dropping one bomb each, with a circular reticle allowing flexible approach angles. However, their low penetration and damage make them unreliable against armored targets. They’re best used for spotting or finishing off low-health ships.

Hull & Secondaries – A Brawler’s Surprise

Graf Zeppelin’s hull is more than just a flight deck. She boasts formidable secondary armament, making her a threat to destroyers that stray too close. With proper upgrades, her secondaries can become a serious deterrent, especially in late-game scenarios.

Her armor plating also provides immunity to non-IFHE shells under 128mm, forcing destroyers to switch to AP if they want to hurt her. Her citadel sits deep below the waterline, making it difficult to hit—though not impossible.

AA Defense – A Weak Spot

Despite being a carrier, Graf Zeppelin’s AA suite is underwhelming. Her flak output is low, and continuous damage is modest. Even Tier VIII carriers can pressure her, and Tier X supercarriers pose a serious threat. She must rely on allied AA cover or preemptive strikes to keep enemy planes at bay.

Playstyle – Aggressive, But Calculated

Graf Zeppelin excels when played assertively but not recklessly. Her torpedo bombers should be the primary weapon, used to strike isolated or distracted targets. Attack aircraft are best reserved for destroyers or cruisers, while dive bombers serve as scouts or finishers.

Her secondaries allow her to contribute in surface engagements, especially when enemies close the distance. However, pushing forward without support can lead to a quick demise due to her poor concealment and weak AA.

Pros & Cons

Pros:

  • Fastest torpedo and dive bombers in the game
  • High rocket damage and penetration
  • Three torpedoes per attack run
  • Accurate bombs with flexible approach angles
  • Powerful secondary armament
  • Deep-set citadel, hard to hit

Cons:

  • Fragile and slow attack aircraft
  • Poor agility across all squadrons
  • Weak AA defenses
  • Low torpedo and bomb alpha damage
  • Worst concealment among carriers

Optimal Configuration

Upgrades:

  1. Slot 1: Air Groups Modification 1 – Faster aircraft return speed
  2. Slot 2: Aircraft Engines Modification 1 – Longer engine boost duration
  3. Slot 3: Secondary Battery Modification 1 – Boosts secondary range and accuracy
  4. Slot 4: Torpedo Bombers Modification 2 – Increases aircraft HP
  5. Slot 5: Flight Control Modification 1 – Faster aircraft restoration, more deck slots

Commander Skills:
Focus on enhancing torpedo bomber performance, with secondary skills optionally supporting her surface combat role. Skills that improve aircraft speed, HP, and aiming time are highly recommended.

Final Thoughts

Graf Zeppelin is not your typical carrier. She’s fast, aggressive, and capable of punishing inattentive enemies with relentless torpedo strikes and surprise secondary salvos. But she’s also vulnerable—especially to air attacks and overextension. Played with precision and boldness, she can dominate the battlefield. Played carelessly, she’ll be sunk before her squadrons return.
